More than 700 strong, Con Edison's volunteer corps embodies the spirit of volunteerism by giving time, expertise, and a desire to make a difference. Con Edison's many opportunities for volunteer activities provide employees with diverse and rewarding experiences that challenge them as professionals and individuals and that in the end improve the quality of life in the communities we serve.

Whether you are a “veteran” volunteer or a promising new “recruit,” we anticipate that the information on this site will inspire you to continue and expand your activities or to take that first step that will not only help others but will also enrich your own life.

ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES:

The following programs seek volunteers on a year-round, ongoing basis.

Tutoring Program Seeks Volunteers
Lend your teaching skills to low-income, high-potential students through the Breakthrough New York tutoring program.

Breakthrough New York is a tuition-free afterschool and summer academic enrichment program that supports students as they take the most rigorous courses offered in their high schools. In addition, many Breakthrough high school freshmen need tutoring help as they make the transition from public school into challenging college-prep high schools.

Tutors have two options for getting involved:
  • Volunteers can commit to working with one Breakthrough student for two hours per week after school hours during the school year, either at the Breakthrough facility, 540 East 76th Street in Manhattan, or at an agreed-upon central location.
  • Volunteers can commit to staffing Breakthrough’s drop-in tutoring center for two hours two-to-four times per month.
All volunteer tutors are expected to be professional, consistent, and patient.  If you are able and willing to commit to making a difference in the life of a motivated, talented young person, contact Sika Bediako, sika@breakthroughnework.org, or 1-917-432-3083.

Con Edison is a corporate sponsor of Breakthrough New York.

Girls Quest Seeks Mentors and Volunteers
The Girls Quest mentor program matches participant girls ages 12 to 17 with professional women for regular meetings, with the goal of providing a positive influence and opportunities for exploration and fun.

The Girls Quest mentor program requires a year-long commitment between the mentor and mentee. The pair meets twice a month, spending a total of six to eight hours together participating in fun and enriching activities. The mentor provides guidance and support in the girl’s transition to young adulthood; the program is flexible in that the activities planned are geared toward goals established between the mentor and mentee.

Prospective mentors must complete an application, supply references, and undergo an interview and training process. Girls Quest is currently in the midst of scheduling interviews, so if you are interested in this opportunity, please act now and apply!

To begin, visit http://girlsquest.org/prog.mentor.mentor.html to download an application; for more information about the mentoring program and the application process, contact SusanThomas at 1-212-532-7050, ext. 18 or sthomas@girlsquest.org.  Please use subject line “Con Edison Volunteer” when e-mailing.

Girls Quest is a nonprofit organization that works to nurture girls from low-income families in New York, building their academic and social competence to help them achieve their full potential and become active members of their communities. For more information, visit www.girlsquest.org.
