Volunteer to be a Literacy Partners Tutor

Literacy Partners provides free adult and family literacy programs to New York City residents with the help of committed volunteers. Company volunteers are sought to provide basic adult education, help students prepare for their General Equivalency Degree (GED) exams, assist with family literacy and ESL classes, and more.

Teaching experience is not needed to volunteer with Literacy Partners. If you have enthusiasm, commitment, respect for adult learners, and a powerful desire to share and learn, you can help Literacy Partners’ students achieve their goals.

Prospective volunteers are required to submit an application and attend a program orientation session. To receive an application packet and information on upcoming orientations sessions, contact 1-212-725-9200, ext. 120 or volunteermanager@literacypartners.org.

Visit www.literacypartners.org for more information about this organization.

Girls Quest Seeks Mentors and Volunteers

The Girls Quest mentor program matches participant girls ages 12 to 17 with professional women for regular meetings, with the goal of providing a positive influence and opportunities for exploration and fun.

The Girls Quest mentor program requires a year-long commitment between the mentor and mentee. The pair meets twice a month, spending a total of six to eight hours together participating in fun and enriching activities. The mentor provides guidance and support in the girl’s transition to young adulthood; the program is flexible in that the activities planned are geared toward goals established between the mentor and mentee.

Prospective mentors must complete an application, supply references, and undergo an interview and training process. Girls Quest is currently in the midst of scheduling interviews, so if you are interested in this opportunity, please act now and apply!

To begin, visit http://girlsquest.org/prog.mentor.mentor.html to download an application; for more information about the mentoring program and the application process, contact SusanThomas at 1-212-532-7050, ext. 18 or sthomas@girlsquest.org.  Please use subject line “Con Edison Volunteer” when e-mailing.

Girls Quest is a nonprofit organization that works to nurture girls from low-income families in New York, building their academic and social competence to help them achieve their full potential and become active members of their communities. For more information, visit www.girlsquest.org.
